Taking inspiration from the Yoruba Egungun Masquerade and Victorian era Cult of Mourning, this collection studies the perception of death across different cultures. It is believed that the welfare of the living is dependent on our relationship with those who came before us. The point of this collection is to honor and celebrate the bond between those who live and those who have departed.
The collection is titled “Iku,” meaning Death in the Yoruba language. Iku tends to be personified as a deity but can be more accurately represented as a force. How we deal with Iku as a force varies from person to person, and on a grander scale, from culture to culture.
